Hair Washing

Preparation
Timing: Wait for the recommended timeframe provided by your medical team before starting to wash your hair. This is usually within the first few days to a week after the transplant.
Gather Supplies
- Mild provided shampoo (fragrance-free and recommended by your medical team)
- Cooled, boiled water (room temperature)
- Soft towel
- Clean cup or container (for diluting shampoo if needed)
- Gentle showerhead or cup for rinsing

Step-by-Step Washing Process
1. Prepare Diluted Shampoo
If directed by your medical team, dilute the provided shampoo with an equal amount of cooled, boiled water. Mix gently.
2. Positioning
Stand in front of a mirror to ensure you can see what you’re doing. Place a towel around your shoulders to catch any water or shampoo runoff.
3. Wet the Scalp
Use a gentle showerhead or cup to wet your scalp with lukewarm cooled, boiled water. Be cautious not to direct the water flow directly onto the transplanted area.
4. Apply Shampoo
Pour a small amount of the diluted shampoo onto your fingertips. Gently apply it to the donor and recipient areas without rubbing or scrubbing.
5. Massage Gently
Use your fingertips to massage the shampoo into your scalp using gentle circular motions. Avoid any vigorous rubbing or pressure.
6. Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse your scalp thoroughly with lukewarm cooled, boiled water. Ensure all shampoo is completely washed away.
7. Pat Dry
Gently pat your scalp and hair dry with a soft, clean towel. Avoid rubbing to prevent unnecessary friction.
8. Air Dry
Allow your hair to air dry naturally. Do not use a hairdryer during the initial post-transplant period unless expressly permitted by your medical team.
9. Post-Wash Observations
Inspect the transplanted area for any signs of redness, swelling, or unusual reactions. If you notice anything concerning, contact your medical team promptly.
Additional Tips:
- Shampoo Frequency: Follow the specific shampooing frequency recommended by your medical team. Initially, this may be every 1–2 days, with adjustments as your recovery progresses.
- Handling Grafts: Avoid direct pressure on the transplanted area and handle it with extreme care during the washing process.
- Avoid Harsh Products: Do not use any hair care products, styling agents, or medications on the transplanted area without explicit approval from your medical team.
- Follow-Up Appointments: Attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your transplant surgeon to ensure proper healing and address any concerns
- Clear Communication: Always prioritize clear communication with your medical team. If you have questions or encounter any issues during the washing process, reach out to your surgeon or healthcare provider promptly for guidance.
